I can’t think of a more gut-wrenching scene then watching a mother, lover or friend tend to a loved one who is in palliative care and for anyone that’s had been in the role of care giver, the opening scene was deeply heart breaking as Walter slowly and painfully changes the diapers of Marcos, his partner who is succumbing to the effects of leukaemia. When Marco’s passes, his mother Emily (played by Julie Fain Lawrence) is devastated and travels with Walter to the Amazon for a ritual that will put her son’s spirit to rest and potentially bring some closure to the situation but her heavy drinking and continual outbursts threaten the very course of their trip. In the end, Emily reveals herself to be deeply complex and caring even in her moments of complete disconnection, her Brazilian maternal dramas kept everyone entertained and one their feet. This is a story about letting go of the past, reconciling the present and moving forward into the future and it’s a beautiful and touching reminder of how interdependent our lives really are. A deeply moving and joyful exploration life that is both entertaining to watch and soul nourishing to experience.
